Become a Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in joining our literacy team!

Learn to Read provides free one-on-one tutoring, small group, and computer based instruction to adults 16 years of age or older who are generally below a 6th or 9th grade reading level. Volunteers are an integral part of our organization.  You can help make a difference by being an adult literacy tutor, assisting an instructor in a small group class, or helping in the computer lab.

Here are the steps to join our growing family of volunteers:

Step 1.

Click here and complete the Online Registration Form. A staff member will contact you with the Volunteer Information Session schedule.

Step 2.

Attend a Volunteer Information Session. Dates are listed in the Volunteer FAQ

Step 3.

Complete initial volunteer requirements:

  • Verified VolunteersClick here and complete the online background check with Verified Volunteers. Our organization code is t5vse0z. (Click here for detailed instructions). Verified Volunteers charges a $21.50 fee.
  • Proliteracy Online Courses– Complete three free ProLiteracy Tutor Training Online courses, “Introduction to Literacy,” “Working with Adult Literacy Learners,” and “Introduction to Literacy Instruction”. (Click here for detailed instructions) These courses generally take 4 to 5 hours to complete. You can do them all at once, or at your own pace.
  • Submit Certificates– Print course completion certificates and turn them in at the LTR office or via email to

Step 4.

Register for and attend in-person Tutor Training. (4-hour workshop.) You may also turn in background check documentation or ProLiteracy Tutor Training Online course certificates on your Tutor Training day.
